Over the years, I’ve come to rely on Topeak for the tools and pumps that keep my rides running smoothly. Before heading out on any ride, I always check my tire pressure with my floor pump. Once that’s done, I load my jersey pockets with two essentials: the RaceRocket HP mini pump and the Ratchet Rocket Essential tool kit. These items come with me on every ride for many reasons, but the biggest one is simple—knowing that with them, I’ll always make it back home.
The RaceRocket HP is my old, trusted choice for inflation on the road. Plenty of riders swear by CO₂ cartridges, and more recently electric mini pumps have become popular, but I’m here to say that a traditional mini pump is still the most reliable option when you’re in a jam. I typically run either latex or TPU tubes, and I’ve found that electric mini pumps don’t play nicely with them. The heat generated during inflation can cause the tubes to fail—sometimes catastrophically. Valve extenders can help keep the heat farther from the tube, but that just means carrying extra gear.
As for CO₂ cartridges, they’re great when they work. Too often, though, I’ve had them fail completely, leaving me stranded on the side of the road hoping a kind cyclist comes along. The RaceRocket HP always works. It features a hose that screws directly onto the valve stem, preventing air loss during inflation. It can reach high pressures—though you’ll definitely earn it—but there’s nothing wrong with putting in a bit of effort when you’re using a foolproof method to get rolling again.
The Ratchet Rocket Essential is the only multitool I carry. It’s incredibly compact and includes ten different bits: Allen sizes from 2 to 6, Torx bits from T10 to T25, and a Phillips head for good measure. The ratcheting handle feels solid and delivers up to 18 Nm of torque. Everything packs neatly into a small pouch that slips easily into any jersey pocket. I use this tool often, and it has never let me down.
At home, I rely on the JoeBlow Twin Turbo floor pump to top off my tires before rides and to handle tire changes. It’s rugged, reliable, and easy to use—exactly what you want in a home pump. Topeak has a knack for keeping cyclists pedaling. Pumps and tools are clearly their sweet spot, and they’ve nailed it. I’ve highlighted my current personal favorites here, but a look at their lineup shows there’s something for every rider’s needs.
