Cervelo P5
Triathlon bikes are a strange breed, and I am not ordinarily a fan. But, the new Cervelo P5 is certainly interesting to look at. There is plenty of information on their site.

Wow! This cassette from Ceradure, based in the Netherlands, is crazy, crazy light. It tips the scales at 84 grams compared to 155 grams for a SRAM Red cassette. They also manufacture a stem made from magnesium. Both the stem and cassette are the lightest available, and according to a review on Bike Radar, the cassette performs very well. I am hoping to be able to present my impressions of both these pieces in the future.
I received the Outlier Hudson Pivot Shirt for Christmas, and find I am wearing it more often than I probably should. I am making a concerted effort to leave it in the closet for a few days, lest anyone start to think I only own one button down shirt. The Giza cotton is very soft and comfortable against the skin, and the cut is perfect for riding a bike. There is no binding whatsoever when in the drops. The shirt has two button breast pockets, a functional tab collar and side body gussets. Unfortunately, this was a limited run piece, and it has sold out. I feel slightly guilty for writing about something that is no longer obtainable, but it only underscores the fact that it is wise to keep an eye out for new releases from Outlier.
Vorwaertz are a German company making furniture and bikes. The VWRZ 1.1 is a carbon tubed, stainless steel lugged track bike. The lugs are 3D printed, allowing for intricate design work. The tubes are then glued to the lugs. It makes for an interesting looking bicycle, but if the past Vitus frames are any indication, this may not be the best method of building a bike. I would question it’s overall strength. Never the less, an interesting project.
I saw the Kalavinka carbon fiber track bike at the velodrome two months ago, and was suitably impressed with it’s looks. I know little about it, but it seems to be in use at the track quite a bit. It’s a definite departure from Akio Tanabe’s traditional steel work and lugs. He is certainly keeping up with the times.
I spoke with Craig at eecycle Works the other day, and he let me in on a little secret. The new eecrankset is in production, and it should be available in the next couple of months. As I’ve written before, the eebrakes are the best brakes I’ve ever used, and I’m sure the crankset will be just as exceptional.
It’s almost the New Year, so I thought it might not be to early to start my list of things I need and want for the coming year. Jackets are hard to justify for our Southern California climate, but it has been very cold here as of late, so a new jacket might be just the thing. The Swrve Wax Riding Jacket is spot on in terms of comfort and looks. I’ve tried it on, and I’m happy to report that it is very comfortable indeed. The Wax Riding Jacket is definitely on my list.
According to Bike Rumor, Cervelo has negotiated a financing agreement with PON Holdings BV, a Dutch trading and services company. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Cervelo, though I am even more curious as to what Gerard Vroomen is up to. I hear rumor he is working on a new bike company, but that remains to be seen. He sold his stake in Cervelo in May of 2011.
The new limited edition Swrve WWR Trousers are a wonderful addition to their line. They are wind and water resistant and made from a four way stretch fabric. They have articulated knees, a seamless gusseted crotch and reflective belt loops. Today’s commute involved going across town, and the trousers performed flawlessly. They did not impede my riding in any way, and were incredibly comfortable. They are quick drying, so going through puddles was not an issue. The trousers also have the signature Swrve pen pocket which I’ve come to love. Best of all, the trousers are perfectly suited for the office, and easily dressed up with a pair of black dress shoes. I’ve come to love clothing that can go from the bike to the office to the symphony, and these trousers do just that.
I’ve never been completely satisfied with seat packs, but Rapha is looking to change my opinion. The Rapha Seat Pack is a stocking stuffer I would like to try. Sometimes there are just too many things to cram into your jersey pockets.
