Firefly Bicycles have opened shop in Boston. I am looking forward to seeing some beautiful frames coming out of their new studio. Following, I’ve posted part of their press release.
While our company is new Tyler, Jamie and Kevin have designed, crafted, and fit bikes for a combined 35+ years in the Boston area. We shaped one of the most revered small bicycle frame builders in the world — and, in the process, we helped to shape national and international cycling and bike culture.
Firefly was born because we love our craft. We’re serious cyclists and we know you’ll appreciate the intelligence, passion, meticulous attention to detail and quality materials that go into every frame we make. Boston has long been one of the nation’s most influential hubs of handmade bikes. We’re here. Our hearts are here, and we draw inspiration from our home’s rich heritage and cycling community. Every single Firefly bike is made here in Boston from the highest quality stainless steel and titanium tubing.
Thanks very much for your interest in what we’re doing. We look forward to making your next bike.

I really like the aesthetic of this commuter. This is a new company based in Holland that believes in simplicity. Their website is worth checking out.

Banksy is busy these days. Wonder if he’s getting around on a bicycle.

This is not at all cycling related, but I think it’s worth mentioning that Banksy is in town. Perhaps he’s here for some Oscar hijinks.

Chrome are having a giveaway to win this incredibly cool Schwinn. I would be very happy to have such a cool ride, and I hope I win. It’s probably not a good idea to post about this as my odds are sure to get worse, but I need to spread the love. The contest can be accessed here. Good luck!

Some people might think these are my tools, but there are other people out there with my compulsive behaviors. This image is from an excellent site called Things Organized Neatly.

I posted a while back about cycling pants, and how they were no better than regular jeans to ride in. I’m hoping I am proven wrong by the upcoming Rapha jeans. I got to see a sample of them in NYC over the summer, and they definitely looked promising. I received an e-mail from Rapha last week alerting me to their imminent arrival. I am hoping to be able to review them in the near future.

I have yet to participate in a Rapha ride and once again wish I could give this one a try. Unfortunately, this is the season of Oscars, and I’ll be working that weekend. I suspect it will be great fun, and I urge those inclined to give it a try. Forty five miles should be perfect, and I’m guessing there will be a bit of hill climbing. Following is the text from Rapha.
Saturday, February 19th in Santa Monica, California we will roll out from Bike Effect, one of the most recent additions to our Retail Partner family. The ride? The Gauntlet. Despite the ominous sounding name this ride is open to one and all and purports to be a great ride up and through the Santa Monica hills. For those of us who are attending from the Portland, Oregon office we are crossing our fingers and praying for sunshine. Join us.
Ride Details:
• 45 Miles, starting and ending at Bike Effect. map
• Coffee at 8:30am – Ride departure 9am sharp
• Return to Bike Effect to view the entire Spring & Summer 2011 range
• If you’re in town send us a note: rsvp@rapha.cc

I am posting the dates for the upcoming CicLAvia events because absolutely everyone needs to participate. Last years CicLAvia was one of the best events I’ve ever participated in. Everywhere I looked, there were people smiling, riding, walking, roller blading, and just generally taking a fresh look at the city we live in. I highly recommend everyone mark their calendars for at least one of the three dates, if not all. The October date suits me especially well as it’s my birthday. That will be quite a celebration. Following, I’ve posted the press release from CicLAvia.
CicLAvia will roll on the streets of Los Angeles three times in 2011. The route will be more-or-less the same as 10-10-10, with expansion to South L.A., Boyle Heights, and/or Chinatown as CicLAvia works with these communities and gets the new extensions ready and permitted – most likely in October. Below are the dates – click on a date to link to the event page on Facebook – invite friends and spread the word!
Sunday April 10th 2011
Sunday July 10th 2011
Sunday October 9th 2011

Through good fortune, I discovered a local wheel builder I hadn’t heard of before. The story started last October, when I ordered a custom wheel set from a wheel builder in the Southwest. Unfortunately, my experience was not a good one in terms of time, and quality of build. Never the less, I soldiered on, until my rear wheel spokes were singing so loudly, it was time for a fix. Enter Wheelbuilder. I called and was connected to Vicki Appel. She was incredibly knowledgable, and led me in the right direction for a solution to my problem. I headed out to Wheelbuilder, where my wheels were checked for tension. It was very uneven despite the wheels being true. I opted for fresh spokes, and nipples they source from the San Diego area. The wheels were ready for pick up just two days later. I couldn’t be happier with the results. This company is top notch in terms of professionalism and quality of product. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a fresh set of wheels. Also, they have a wheel weight calculator that is really useful and fun.
