The 9W Magazine Issue 3 Release Party is an event worth going to if you are in NYC. 9W is a beautiful magazine, and worth supporting. I’ve been longing for Issue 3 for some time now, and I look forward to thumbing through a copy.

Paul Budnitz has added the Number 3 Steel city bike to the line. At $2800.00, it is the least expensive bike in the range, and features a Cro-Moly Steel Cantilever™ Frame and Cro-Moly Steel Halfcrown™ Fork. The parts spec is top of the line, and it is definitely a beautiful machine to look at. The price is steep for a city bike, but as they say, you get what you pay for.

On my trip to NYC, I was concerned about locking up my bike while exploring the city. I got in touch with Kryptonite and was told about the New York Series of locks. This is a special series that insures your bike up to a certain value while locked up in NYC. None of their other locks offer this, so the New York series it had to be. When the locks arrived, I was blown away. Really, really solid locks. The girth on the mini is incredible, and the New York Legend chain is a sight to behold as well as something to be held. It weighs over 10 pounds, so as you might imagine, your bicycle would be quite safe. On my trip, I brought the Fahgettaboudit and the New York U-Lock. I combined this with a Kryptonite cable lock. This combination was all I needed to instill confidence that my bike would still be there upon exiting the store, museum, or restaurant. I rode often at night, so the key with high intensity bulb was a welcome perk. This is an exceptional series of locks that would serve any and all cycles well.

Tracko and Yanko have released the Ramblin’ Roll tool pouch. It’s a very simple design, made to carry a tube, CO2 cartridge, valve, tire lever and small multi-tool. There is also a bit of room for an ID and some cash. It looks to do exactly what a small tool roll should, which is carry the essentials in a simple and reliable manner. Alas, the pouch is shown as being sold out, but hopefully there are more in the works. The photo was taken by John Watson.

Once in a while, the stars align, and something I had wished for gets made. I’ve had my Garmin Edge 800 for some time now, but was never happy with the mounting position. Because of the steep angle of my stem, the Garmin is virtually impossible to see. I had wished for a mount that would position the Garmin centered and in front of the bars. Enter Above Category in Mill Valley, California. They have made exactly what I wished for, and call it the Bar Fly. It is a very simple mount that positions the computer exactly where it should be. I am looking forward to trying one once they have more in stock. A preorder is available now for delivery in late April. Above Category is a top notch shop, and this product comes from the brilliant minds within. As I said, the stars have aligned, at least momentarily.

On my trip to NYC, I was able to see some Nau pieces in person at NYC Velo. We in Los Angeles do not have that opportunity, so it was nice being able to try the clothing. One piece that made an impression was the Nau Vice Blazer. I really like simple and stylish pieces such as this. It is made from Teijin Ecocircle® technology, a mix of recycled polyester and organic cotton, and is then given a DWR finish for water repellency. The fabric has a heathered look giving the impression of wool. It has five pockets, one of which is at the rear and sized for a small U-lock, a nice touch geared toward the cyclist. I’ve pictured the Tar Heather color for clarity on this site, but mine is the Caviar Heather color, a shade that should do well in any situation. One detail I especially like is the cuff on the sleeves, and how it comes to a point on top of the hand. Small detail indeed, but it sets it apart, and makes it just a touch different. I will wear this often, and report back after I’ve broken it in.

This popped into my inbox a while back, and I thought it might be of interest to those into vintage gear and/or ads. I love the flags shooting through the center, especially the Swiss flag.
