It’s hard to imagine living in a place where getting fresh, clean water is next to impossible, but it is unfortunately the norm for many around the world. Libra Coffee aims to help with that situation, and simultaneously provide fresh craft coffee to those traveling or camping with their Pourtables coffee packs. The concept is simple – a single cup brew that is placed over a mug. Add hot water, and you have a fresh cup of coffee. The coffee is delicious, and it is simple to make. The packs are easily carried in a backpack, briefcase or carry-on for coffee on the go. Now for the interesting bit: for every box of 10-pack Pourtables purchased, the company provides clean water for 2 people. This is done by way of providing water filters to the people in the coffee growing regions Libra Coffee works with. Each extra-strength water filter can provide clean drinking water for 100 people for up to 5 years. Also, if the Pourtables aren’t what you need, Libra Coffee offers coffee subscriptions for whole beans that will also provide water filters to those in need. A portion of Robin Williams’ bike collection is being auctioned via Paddle8, an online auction house. The bikes were donated by Robin Williams’ children, and the proceeds of the auction will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. The collection spans a wide variety of bicycles with some exceptional standouts such as the Sycip Java Town and the Colnago C40 Gold Anniversary Limited Edition. (more…)

Inhabitat has a short post on a new bike lane in Poland that glows in the dark. It is entirely solar powered, and gives out light for up to 10 hours from a full days charge. More photos after the break.

The first item is the iJ.haBu jacket, already known as one of the finer cycling jackets available. The second piece is the iJ.Intermediate jacket, perhaps the most versatile piece of clothing Assos offers. Both feature understated styling, blacked out logos, and subtle reflective highlights. The production is limited, so it would be wise to make a move on these sooner than later, either directly through their website, or at your local dealer. This mini collection speaks volumes about what happens when complex engineering is combined with streamlined good looks, working together to offer beautiful and incredibly functional pieces of cycling attire.

The power meter is an oft discussed topic among cyclists. There are those who want as much data as possible, and those who favor no data at all. The second group tends to eschew all forms of data – no Strava, no computers. This group believes in the purity of just riding to ride.
The first group enjoys the world of data, and they take advantage of every possible available stat to analyze their ride. I most definitely don’t fall into that bunch, as I’m not sure I even understand what is available to me. I also don’t quite fit in the second group, because I do like keeping a record of my rides, and I also like having some basic stats at my disposal. So, I seem to fall squarely in the middle, wanting to know some basic info, but perhaps not delving too deep.
When approached about the Pioneer Power meter systems, I wasn’t sure if this was something I wanted to investigate. My Garmin already gave me plenty of information, so would the Pioneer system be overkill? (more…)

Once in a great while, a product comes my way that demands immediate attention. One such item is this pair of Gripp Tour SF 2.0 cycling gloves from Hirzl. The cycling glove is an often overlooked accessory that merits more attention. Miserable gloves with poor grip or sweat management can make a ride a lot less enjoyable, and even perhaps a bit dangerous. Hirzl has tackled both these issues with the Gripp. The glove is made from kangaroo leather that goes through an elaborate tanning process which guarantees amazing grip in both dry and wet conditions. Yesterday’s ride in 90 degree plus weather was a good test, as the sweat was pouring fast and furious. (more…)

The iconic Wilshire Boulevard edition of CicLAvia is back. Starting at Wilshire/Western, and ending downtown, this edition is a short one, but also one of my favorites as there is something special about riding down the center of Wilshire Blvd. For those who haven’t yet tried this route, I highly recommend giving it a go. I’ll be there with family in tow.
