Over the last few days we’ve hosted a stream of Swiss people who are using LA as a meeting spot before heading off for further adventures in places as far flung as Tahiti. As is often the case with visitors, they had many questions about our fair city. One question in particular struck me. I was asked what is the size of LA, not just the city, but LA County. I quickly headed to Wikipedia for an answer, and discovered that LA County covers approximately 4,083 square miles. To put that into perspective for our Swiss visitors, that is roughly one third the size of the entire country of Switzerland, or for a more localized comparison, LA County would swallow the states of Delaware and Rhode Island. This is big, really big, and that size figured into my thoughts during my ride this past Saturday. As I pedaled up to Mulholland and then out to Topanga and ultimately the beach, I marveled at the immensity of our city, and of the huge differences from one neighborhood to another. From the lush landscaping and beautiful homes of Hancock Park to the grit and grime of Hollywood, to the natural beauty of Mulholland, the city changes quickly mile to mile. Throw in the tremendous vistas, the incredible diversity of cultures, the odd combination of architecture, and you have a recipe for a city that will always keep you interested and eager to discover new spots previously unknown to you. That is probably the best attribute of all, the realization that no matter how long you live here, there will always be new discoveries. So, hop on your bike, start pedaling, and find a new adventure in the City of Angels.

Now this is exciting news. Assos is partnering with USA Cycling to be the official apparel supplier for the team, starting this spring and going all the way through the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. A new Team USA kit will be available in June. I’m glad to see Asso’s new concentration on the American market, and look forward to more announcements in the near future. And, count me in for a Team USA kit. (more…)

It is not often I post about a product that is still a year out, but this one seems too cool not to start talking about now. Why? Because deep down I am still an analog kind of a guy. The Omata is an analog GPS speedometer. The back of house functions are pretty typical fare for a cycling computer, but it’s the visible face that’s the beauty of the device: an old fashioned speedometer. (more…)

Brooks is celebrating their 150 year anniversary with the release of the “Dashing Bikes” series. The collection will involve builders such as Brompton, Canyon, Schindelhauer, Skeppshult and Salsa, to name just a few. The builds shown so far are beautiful, from the futuristic Canyon, to the utilitarian Brompton. This promises to be a wonderful showcase for Brooks, and will undoubtedly energize the brand. For those lucky enough to be traveling through London, the bikes will be on display on a rotating basis throughout the year in the flagship B1866 store in Covent Garden. I admit it is difficult to contain my excitement over this special screening of Breaking Away taking place in S.L.O. The event is presented by Masi in conjunction with the Eroica California. It kicks off a weekend of celebrating cycling, with many different activities taking place, such as a vintage bicycle fair, a bicycle swap meet, a bicycle concours d’ elegance, and the Eroica ride on Sunday. Pop-Up shops are an ever expanding phenomenon, and tonight there will a new addition, the Cadence Pop-Up on Abbot Kinney in Venice. With photography by Joe Pugliese, this will be an event not to miss. The opening party is tonight at 7 pm, and the pop-up will continue through March 13th. The North American Handmade Bicycle Show begins next week, and for this edition, the show is back in California, Sacramento to be exact. The press releases are flying fast and furious, with a handful of newcomers announcing their participation. One of the first pieces I treated myself to from Mission Workshop was the Eiger jacket. It’s been over four years since I got it, and each time I wear it, I am reminded of the quality and excellent design Mission Workshop has come to represent. The company may be best known for their messenger bags and backpacks, but I am here to tell you that their clothing is on a par with those offerings. (more…)

Artist and cyclist Thomas Yang just released three new letterpress prints. They are “I Spend My Life Behind Bars”, “It Takes 2 To Tandem”, and “EAT SLEEP RIDE REPEAT”. They are produced using a Heidelberg Press and printed on 110 lb. Lettra 100% cotton paper from Crane & Co. As always, these are limited to a series of 100 prints, and are available directly from 100copies. (more…)
